Triathlon as a Sleep Aid!

If you for some reason do not believe that training for an Ironman is exhausting…read on!

In the middle of the night last night, the baby, who is teething, started screaming. James slept through not only the screaming, but me tripping and falling as I stumbled from our room in my “tylenol pm” induced haze! (I had a really bad sore throat) Then, he slept through me coming back to bed and nudging him (none too gently!) with my foot for not getting up to help!

This training has him exhausted!

Life Outside of Ironman!

With only 38 days to go until the big race in Kona, it seems we are in our own “triathlon of training”. Instead of “swim, bike, run” we “eat, sleep, breathe” triathlon these days! While visiting with Uncle Kevin, Aunt Alicia, and sweet little Lindsey, we had a chance to relax and remember there is life outside of the Ironman! (shhh…don’t tell James I said that!)

Aaron got a chance to practice with his new fins and snorkel!

Rylan loved “sneaking” food to the doggie!

Nothing to do with the Ironman!

These pictures have absolutely nothing to do with the Ironman race!

When we heard Hurricane Irene might be affecting our area, Aaron, Rylan and I decided to go visit my brother.

Uncle Kevin got a scooter for his birthday. Aaron was THRILLED when he took him for a ride on it!

Fundraiser Postponed

Due to Hurricane Irene, our fundraiser, “Get Corny for ALS” has been postponed to September 17.

Simple

For training today, James has a 2 hour bike ride and a 30 minute run. He is doing the bike ride on his trainer in our living room. As he rides, he likes to watch Ironman videos for inspiration. He is currently watching the 2010 Ironman World Championship. As I walked through the living room, I heard one of the athletes state, “You might think it is simple…swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and then run 26.2 miles…”

I thought “No, I don’t think it is simple! I think it is CRAZY!”

Seriously? Does anyone out there think it is “simple”?

Practicing for Kona

The boys have been doing some of their own practicing for Kona. Yesterday they went to a "Luau Under the Sea" birthday party! They wore their tropical shirts and enjoyed a "Hawaiian good time"!

After some confusion with the manufacturer, James has finally received his "Team Blazeman" shirts! We are excited to officially be members of the team, as we continue to fight the war on ALS.

Master Chef or Ironman?

.Like many Americans, we have gotten caught up in the craze of watching "food shows" on television. We do not have cable or satellite or anything like that, so our choices are limited as to what we watch. As a result, we have become big fans of "Master Chef" on FOX.

There is a particular judge on there that I "love to hate". I think he makes Gordon Ramsey look like Pollyanna! If you have seen the show, then you know that I am talking about Joe Bastianich. I do not know what he is like in real life, but on "Master Chef", he is just plain mean! He spits out people's food, dumps their food in the trash, and usually succeeds in making someone cry! "

Well, guess who will be swimming right there along side James at the Ironman! Yes, Mr. Bastianich himself will be competing at Kona! When told he would be there, James said "He will probably tell me my gels do not taste right and criticize my nutrition!" Ha! I said "No, he will say that they are lacking flavor and spit them on the ground!"

To his credit, he is a man who has worked hard for his spot, losing 60 pounds along the way. He had to qualify, just like everyone else. I read in an article that he has a goal to finish in 12 hours. Will he do it? Stay tuned on October 8 to find out!

Long Runs!

With only 56 days until the Ironman race in Kona, Hawaii, the workouts are really starting to pick up!

Yesterday's workout was a 3 hour run!

Although James wears a "racebelt" with water, gels and salts in it, on a run this long he needs some help. Aaron, Rylan and I are his support crew. He tells us his race route and we bring him water midway through the run.

Aaron is thrilled to be on the Garris support team!

Bike

With 61 days left until the big race, James thought it would be a good idea to get the new bike out on the road! (He's been using the trainer). Since his workout today was a short one (only an hour!) he took the bike out for a ride.

The Iron Baby "Working Out"

Rylan has a fascination with the treadmill. Here he is "working out" on it! He loves to climb up there, and if James is running on it, he crawls to it just as fast as he can!

65 Days Until Kona!

Only 65 days until the Ironman in Kona! The excitement, training and nerves are all starting to build!

Snorkel!

Aaron loves going to the gym with his Daddy! Today, on the way home, they stopped to get a snorkel, mask and fins so Aaron can practice for Kona!

A Special Present from a Special Big Brother!

Aaron was very proud of the present he picked out!

The Iron Baby Celebrates a Birthday!

Enjoying a birthday cupcake!

Ready to blow out the candle!
The birthday boy is not a morning person!

It is difficult to believe that this time last year, Rylan was a 7 lb. 11 oz bundle of joy in the hospital! (and I was still loopy from all the meds!) It has been a special year for us as we have watched him grow. Now, the sweet little "Iron Baby" is 1!

Birthday Celebration!

What do you get a guy who is training for an Ironman for his birthday? Training gels, of course!
